Why
do I need repeated visits?
The problems that chiropractic
addresses have often developed over many years even
though the symptoms of the problem
have just started. When you develop subluxations (improper
motion and position of the vertebrae) it affects the
nerves and soft tissues associated with the area. Left
unchecked the lack of proper circulation to the subluxated
area causes the tissues to become fibrosed (scar tissue)
and the bones and joint surfaces degenerate. Typically
you will not feel symptoms until your body is no longer
able to compensate. That is why something as simple
as bending over to tie your shoe may initiate back
pain.
The intent
of chiropractic adjustments is to restore proper
function to the vertebrae.
The effect of this
is to take pressure off of the irritated nerves.
This allows the soft tissues in the area to relax,
restoring
circulation to the area. Proper nerve flow and blood
flow allows your body to heal the damaged tissues.
During the initial stages of care your vertebrae
will continue
to “seize up” until the supporting tissues
have had adequate time to heal. As your care progresses
your body is better able to maintain the proper function
of the vertebrae and the time between visits will
increase. Some conditions may require ongoing maintenance
due
to irreversible damage from serious injuries or neglect.
How
many adjustments will I need?
The number of adjustments
depends on the condition of an individual prior to
care and their health
goals. The
amount of care also depends on the persistence
of the same stresses that caused a particular
condition in
the first place and the steps an individual takes
deal with
the stress on their body.
In many situations
relief will be experienced within a couple of visits.
Adjustments become
less frequent
as your spine stabilizes. In chronic or severe
cases, complete healing may take months or
even years. |
